Apple Product Updates

October 13, 2005

Well obviously I am a bit late. Many others have already commented on Apples new masterpieces: the new iPod 5G, capable of playing movies and the updated iMac G5 with integrated iSight and remote control. Anyway here are my first impressions.

iPod movie

the new iPod 5GSo finally Apple reveiled their long rumored iPod movie, which is much lighter and thinner than the old ones and is now able to play movies. But it is not the movies that make me really want this new piece of hardware — it’s the hardware itself. Just look at the pictures and you will definitely know what I am talking about.

It was no surprise, at least for myself, that the new iPods look similar to the recently announced iPod nano and are also available in both black and white. They are thinner, the beveled shape has been replaced with a more angular one and the display is much bigger. Well done Apple, simply stunning.

the new iPod 5G

Will I buy the new iPod? Probably. Probably not, because up til now I am quite satisfied with my 4G iPod. And even though it does not look that great and it doesn’t have a color display I currently don’t see the need to update: I still have enough space for my music, the battery still works perferctly and honestly I don’t really care whether my iPod has a color screen or not when I am carrying it in my pocket ;) But on the other hand I said the same thing about the Mighty Mouse — and after some weeks I bought it nevertheless ;)

iMac G5

But even more amazing than the new iPod is the updated iMac G5. Why? Well beside some minor performance related upgrades and the fact that its enclosure has become thinner, there are three further aspects, that make the new iMac a real killer machine.

Front Row — the new home entertainment software form Apple

First of all the integrated iSight, which will definitely have a positive impact on the propagation of audio and video conferencing. And secondly, and from my point of view much more important, the new Apple Remote Control, that enables you to control your Mac in a convenient way while relaxing on your couch.

In combination with Apple’s new home entertainment software “Front Row”, Apple finally managed to produce a fully featured home entertainment center. The only drawback: once again videos and series can only be purchased from within the United States. Come on Apple, hurry up. I wanna enjoy the same services here in Europe.

I agree, the iMac is an amazing update. I’m ordering one over the next few days. :)

Does anyone know anything yet about the extensibility of Front Row? Can People create their own Items, for example a Flickr-Photowatcher or RSS-Readers? I’m a little disappointed by the design of Front Row — even Windows Media Center Edition looks better…

I think FrontRow and the remote look terrific. My iMac is my only TV, so I hope Apple comes out with FrontRow and a Bluetooth remote soon. “The only drawback: once again videos and series can only be purchased from within the United States.” I don’t think we non-Americans are missing much. The selection is very slim (only Lost is worth watching), the resolution poor, the price too high, and the DRM cumbersome. I think the video iPod can be put to better use by ripping your own DVDs and recording your own shows (with your El Gato DVR or whatever). Maybe we’ll be lucky enough to get one-click DVD ripping in a future update of iTunes. I believe there are less popular video/mp3 players that already do this.

The new iPod it’s good, but they could have made one with more storage capacity (80 Gb would be a must have for me). But the iMac with Front Row is great! I hope they release soon some kind of SDK so we can develop our own plugins; DVR is missing, and that’s the only reason I would keep using MythTV on a Linux box.

For those people who didn’t see Steve Job’s presentation… Link Enjoy!

I love the new iPod, but the iMac’s remote, the black top part, looks akward for a Mac product. With the second announcement of a black-product from Apple, does anyone get the impression they are killing off the white-apple steriotype?

ZicklePop

Do you know what kind of hardware you would need to rip a DVD to h.264. Even on my iMac G5 1.8Ghz it takes ages to convert a little 3 min video to h.264

Jordan

That „one more thing“ was disappointing for me. I understand that Apple wants to increase its marketshare, but they seem to forget the pro users. If Jobs is talking about one more thing I would expect something groundbreaking. Like a black Powerbook. @ Jordan: Link lists recommendations for playback of h.264 encoded HD. I guess to create h.264 content you’ll need at least a 2.0 GHz G5 Powermac.

I’m with some others on this one. The new iPod is definitely good looking, but it doesn’t instill the same sense of “gotta have it!” that other new Apple announcements have generated. The new iMac, on the other hand, is the best announcement of the show. My current iMac is getting long in the tooth, so I’ve been looking to buy a Powermac. The new iMac is making me reconsider this though. I love Front Row and the remote. The built-in iSight is a gimmick, but could be fun nonetheless.

Chris

The new iPod defenately look nice. I’m going to get one when I get the money. Of course the iMac looks even nicer, but I’ll never have money for that.

Andy

I’ve been thinking about buying one of the newer iMacs, they’re the perfect machine. Nice and fast, lots of storage, not to mention they’re drop dead gorgeous. I’ll be waiting to see how the new Powerbooks are though, if the HD resolution rumor is true then I’ll be all over it.

Chris McElligott

@Benke: I’ve ripped DVDs to h264 and play them back on my 1Ghz Powerbook. Playback is fine, even when I have my powerbook outputting to my 20” cinema display (full screen). I can also rip DVDs at full resolution at ~1000kbps using handbrake just fine, but it takes something like 13 hours. Of course, twice that long for two-pass encoding. (just thought some actual numbers might be helpful)

I think the new iMac’s features are just what I missed…it’s really time to switch now. But wait, should I be patient and wait for the Intel chips?

I don’t think I’ll be getting a video iPod, but I really like the idea of downloading videos for $1.99. Unfortunately, I just bought an iMac AND an iSight camera less than a year ago. I’m not sure if it’s accurate or not, but I’ve heard that FrontRow is only going to be available for the new iMacs with the remote. There’s already a petition available if that’s the case: Link

Jason Beaird

@Jason: I’m not sure but, have those online-petitions ever worked? I don’t think Apple’s gonna give in to one of those.

ZicklePop

I’m sure Front Row will see some useful updates in the future — it’s just 1.0 now. I think the new iMac will be my next desktop machine, as it’s both powerful and affordable. Speaking of 1.0’s, what ever happened to Pages?

Colllin

I agree with most people here that the new iMac is now somewhat perfect. I would recommend to buy to switch now becuase with the new processor architecture coming next year the apple products won’t be working as flawlessly as they do now at least for the first 12 months or so. The new iPod didn’t impress me as much as the iMac did. Am I the only person who thinks that the new display and click wheel and all around proportions look odd? The 4th generation of iPod and the iPod mini were perfectly looking but know something changed to make it look worse. I would have wished for a whole new concept and arrangement of the clickwheel and display for the new iPod to make it look fresh and cool.

Barfuss

@ Colllin — Pages is still around, I use it as my main word processor on my Mac. Word feels too ported for my liking. No doubt we will see updates to Pages in iWork ‘06 (hopefully with the addition of Numbers 1.0)

Jordan

Hi! There must be some -professional- designers visiting this site. I’m not, even on the contrary. But I want to become one. I know, I know — and I can hear you thinking: oh no, not another again ;-) Well anyway, here are some questions. Why do a lot of professional designers prefer Apple? Is there a lot of downloadable software for Apple computers (open source, freeware, and stuff)? And last, but now least: what is better: CRT or TFT (regarding the fact that as a print designer one need a good enough resolution and true enough colors)? So, why Apple and why G5? Just wondering, as one day I’ll need a new computer next year (using PC now, with Windows XP on it and a iiyama CRT on my desk). Thanks in advance!

Marc

Marc: lots of questions there! To start with, I think a lot of designers prefer Apple because Apple has a design sensibility that strikes a chord with them. OSX’s user interface is generally reckoned to be superior to anything else out there, there’s lots of good software that does what designers need, and—let’s face it—Macs are just pretty. Designers, being (I would hope!) visually aware people, that can be a more important factor than it might be for others.

Benedict Eastaugh

@Marc: I think thedeciosion of CRT or TFT ist difficlut, cause the mainly part of people are still using a CRT. But working on a TFT is very beatyfull. The Problem: There are differences between the colors on these kinds of screens. I saw it on my own: My Page makes a completely different impression on a CRT as on a TFT. Well, last but not least i want to tell you that i usually work with my notebook, so TFT is my favorite screen.

Martin Labuschin

Benedict and Martin, both thanks for your reply! This weekend I went to a shop to see the G5 and I have to say, it strikes a chord indeed. The Operating Systeem seemed to be quiet impressive too. On the other hand, I have to say that in my opinion a good quality CRT is still preferable above a TFT — especially when designing for print. Help! Why is it so hard to make a choice :-\
