CSS Naked Day

April 05, 2006

If you are reading this piece of text directly on the web site and not via some sort of feed reader you might have noticed that I removed my CSS. The reason? Well today is the official CSS Naked Day, initiated by Dustin Diaz.

The idea behind this event is to promote Web Standards. This includes proper use of (x)html, semantic markup and good hierarchy structure. For more information head over to the original article.

Update

So here we are back again with the full feature layout. It was kinda interesting to watch the different reactions on this initiative. Some argued that it would be a weird idea to remove the CSS, since it is essential for modern web sites. I fully agree. However I’m convinced that the best or rather the most effective way to promote the use of standards is not to use them — at least for a short period of time. Anyway now the layout is back. Have a nice day, Wolfgang

I don’t like this crazy idea. CSS is a webstandard as well, why don’t use it for better accessibility & usability?

That is exactly why the Naked CSS day was invented and is a good idea. Stripping off your styles forces you to focus on your structure and semantics. Accessibility — in particular for vision impaired users — is closely tied to these. Bringing your markup into focus like this is a good way to increase awareness of the value of good structure.

It’s kindda interesting… why not? I must implement this :)

ohhh god — i don’t like this idea too! Forget it and use css ;-)

I think it’s a great idea! So many people are completely oblivious to css and how important it is today. As a web developer, it kinda feels like a cross between a holiday and a transit strike.

At least the Google ads still get styled :)

@Wolfgang For the sake of completeness, you IMHO also should remove CSS formatting for the Google ads. Even if this content is delivered remotely. But as said this only gives an account of my personal opinion. ;)

Lars

do google allow this?

I think its a lovely idea, its a shame I didn’t hear about it in time to do something. Still, there’s always next year, eh? Thanks for bring it to my attention.

Hach, tut das gut, wieder die Designs der ganzen Teilnehmer in vollen Ausmaß zu sehen :)

Martin Labuschin

It was a very good idea, and not just to promote webstandards, also to promote the importance and accomodation of css.

If you’re using Firefox, click on “View”, go down to “Page Style” and then select “No Style”. And like magic, the stylesheet will disappear and it will look exactly as it did on CSS Naked Day. And if you’re not using Firefox, whats wrong with you?! No, I jest. To each their own, and all of that jazz. Opera also has the option to disable the stylesheet, I can’t can’t remember exactly how off hand.

very nice idea!!!! think the whole world should do the same for a day!;-)

Cool idea, I’m sure Web Standards will get some extra attention by this event.

I think if we don’t use css we will weight down xhtml code…with css we can do a lot of crazy things saving time…why don’t use them?

Es hat wohl gerade unheimlich viel Spass daran, meinen nNamen zu nutzen um mich lächerluch zu machen. Wolfgang, könntest du bitte den Kommentar von “Labuschin” löschen? Danke

Martin Labuschin

Schon geschehen.

Wolfgang

Finde ich unsinnig. Was hat man denn davon? Just my 2 ¢. -----
