Mighty Mouse Wireless

August 05, 2006

About a year ago Apple released their first mouse with more than one button. Some called it a revolution — I called it an imperative step. Not just because of those people switching from Windows to Mac, but mainly because of the fact that Apple continuously added features to their UI than could only be accessed via right-click.

Up till then I used Apple’s wireless bluetooth driven mouse. So you can imagine that I was kinda disappointed that Apple just shipped a USB variant. But anyway I finally bought one and to be honest — I never used the old bluetooth mouse again. The Mighty Mouse was much lighter and preciser than the old one.

One year later…

Now, one year later, Apple finally released the wireless variant of the Mighty Mouse. My first reaction was like: “Well, so they finally managed to release a bluetooth version. Should I buy one? Definitely no. The old mouse wasn’t that precise and the batteries didn’t last long enough.” But then I recognized that it was not just a bluetooth enabled Mighty Mouse, but that it also uses laser instead of optical tracking…

Laser tracking

So what’s the difference? One important fact is that laser tracking is much preciser compared to old-fashioned optical tracking. Another advantage is that laser based mice work on nearly every surface — great if you have to be mobile and use it with your MacBook. And last but not least batteries tend to last much longer, because there is no LED at the bottom of the mosue.

Pros and Cons

  • precise
  • wireless
  • long lasting batteries
  • great design
  • heavy
  • expensive

Yesterday the package with my brand new wireless Mighty Mouse found its way from Eindhoven to Graz. First impression: looks exactly the same as the wired one. A bit heavier — but that’s okay. So let’s connect it to my MacBook. Hm, I first have to install the software — reboot — not quite Apple-like. But hey, works fine. By the way I took some photos — so if you are interested, head over to the respective flickr gallery.

Sounds kinda nice. Except that this would require Bluetooth to be enabled which of course uses up battery. Having said that, I never quite understood why the USBs on my MacBook were on the left hand side when the Mighty Mouse had such a ridiculously short cable. I probably won’t trade it in for the Bluetooth version – sure seems like an alternative, though.

Yeah, the wire of the MM is a little short but I find it to be just the perfect lenght to connect it to my PB 12” (USB on the left.) It’s fits perfectly and I’ve never had any problems with the mouse; it’s the best mouse I’ve ever used.

I would never have thought that Mac users have problems of this gigantic complexity :-P

I use my macbook for all my work which means I usually have something plugged into all the ports and being able to free up just one was life saver enough. Although i hate how expensive it was, i bought the mx1000 laser mouse when it first came out and i think it cost more. I’m not 100% sold on it in photoshop, but its pulling its weight thus far.

Apple never released features that could only be accessed via a right click. One could always hold down Ctrl and then click normally. It’s called a Ctrl click.

George Haverton

Yeah but that’s exactly what I mean — in the early years of Mac OS all functionality could be accessed via a simple click. But over the years the right- respectively the ctrl- or even alt- click became more and more famous. So the one-button concept was some kinda outdated.

Hmm, Apple FanBoys, buy at least every piece of hardware Apple puts on the market, unbelievable. So what happened with your ‘old’ poor MightyWiredMouse?

The battery weight for me goes on the + column. The wired Mighty Mouse was too light and cheap feeling for me to use. My scroll nub also crapped out within the first week. I may need to add some Mighty Care to my order.

I tested the original MightyMouse once, but wasn’t really excited about the scroll ball. It felt kind of cheap, as you could press the ball almost entirely into to mouse (weird pressure point). At home I have my Wacom tablet plugged in all the time. (Simply the best.) On the road I use the “not so mighty” wireless mouse from apple (I like that it works via bluetooth, so no additional device blocks one of the two USB ports of my mbp) , but miss a scroll wheel very much. Perhaps I should check out the new MightyMouse and give it another try?

And you were not happy with the wired wireless one? :)

ooo get to free up a port!! -----

I just got my wireless Mighty Mouse today (I had the wired version up until now) and I really like it. Sure, it's heavier, but I don't plan on taking it anywhere. Plus you can always remove a battery to lighten the load. Now I've got less wires to clutter my desk, which has a 15" MacBook Pro hooked up to a 24" Dell LCD with a wireless Apple keyboard and a wireless Mighty Mouse. Lovin' it.

Yeah I'm also still really satisfied with my new mouse. Now I can enjoy the freedom of a wireless mouse with the precision of a wired one :)
