RAM Purchase

June 10, 2005

Inspired by Veerle’s newest toys I decided to buy some additional RAM for my PowerMac. Now with 3GB of RAM working with huge images in Photoshop is a piece of cake :)

Upgrading RAM is always rewarded with a speed gain, no matter whether you are on a PC or on a Mac. For example opening a Photoshop file of about 100MB is now just a matter of seconds — this really rocks man. So if some of you play with the thought to upgrade, I can only say that it is definitely worth the money, especially because prices have recently dropped drastically.

You sir, are rich. Neato ;-)

Well I bought the additional 2GB for about 200€. I think that’s a quite reasonable price. And as I said, if you are working with large files, as I do frequently, it’s definitely worth the money.

I’ve upgraded my Ram to 1GB last year on my PC, and it is big enough to do allday tasks without hearing disks swapping… My photoshop files are hardly ever bigger than 20MB, so 1GB is enough for me, thanks :)

Hehe… I thought about upgrading my RAM upwards from 512 MB DDR, but I hope to purchase a mac soon — so I won’t invest money in my PC anymore.

Wow, that’s kick ass. I’d love to have that much RAM, or even be able to use it!

Im not sure, but CS (1) was not able to use anymore than 2 gigs of ram; has this been fixed (improved) in the new CS2? — Otherwise youre really not getting much of your ram and you are imagining things placebo style :P Also, did you really notice much speed improve? I went from 1gig to 2gigs and yes, i felt i could be working with much larger files, but no; i didnt feel much “Speed” improvement…

Stefan

Even if CS2 could only address 2 gigs it would greatly benefit from having 3 gigs. The OS and other applications have a habit of needing RAM as well. And CS2 is able to address more than 2 gigs of RAM on the Mac as well as on 64 bit Windows systems.

Oli

Yes, the RAM modules must be installled in pairs — in my case: 6x512MB. And even if Photoshop was not capable of addressing more than 2GB, all other open applications such as Illustrator, Mail, NetNewsWire etc. would also need some RAM.

Wolfgang

Well, then it seems that I need to upgrade to 4GB (I’ve got 2x1GB).

Stefan

By the way, from my point of view you get the most significant performance gain when upgrading from 512MB to 1GB. Further upgrades are just notable when you’re working with larger files or if you tend to work with several applications simultaneously.

Wolfgang

I have “only” 256 MB and it worked until today. But now I know it’s better to upgrade.

Rene

Yes, agreed. My change from 1 gig to 2 gig did not make a noticeable impact until i was “working”, and then, I was the happiest man alive :) I feel the is kind of becoming a ram race :P Note: Ram is not proportionally related to your manhood. This Public Service Annoucement was brought to you by Seph.ws ^_^

Wow… I’m ridiculous with my iBook G4, 1.2 Ghz and 768 Mb (DDRAM). ^^
