Safari Tab Behavior

November 04, 2005

The latest update of Mac OS includes a brand new version of Safari. This new version is the first public available browser that passes the acid2 test. However after installing the update, a bunch of plugins once again refused to work.

So headed to the respective web sites to download the most recent versions. After installing “Saft” I noticed that Safari’s tab behavior has changed.

The screenshot above shows the initial situation: four tabs opend, the second last is selected. In previous releases closing the selected tab (1) caused Safari to select the next tab (2).

However with the latest release of Saft, Safari selected the first tab (3), which was really annoying. After a while I figured out that the reason for this behavior was the new “focus last selected tab” setting located in the Saft preference pane.

From my point of view such settings shouldn’t be activated by default. So just in case that you’ve experienced the same problems, make sure that you uncheck the respective checkbox.

One thing I’ve noticed — and it makes me really happy — is that if you have any auto-click folders enabled full of RSS feeds, they now all open in that tab, rather than opening in the first tab and closing all of the others.

Thanks very much for working out this tab problem! It’s been really annoying for the last few days.

So it seems I’m not crazy after all. I’d noticed some change in tabbed browsing, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Please clarify, though: Is this new behaviour a part of Safari or Saft?

The new behavior is caused by Saft’s “focus last selected tab” setting. Without Saft installed respectively without activating the setting, everything works fine.

Excellent, thanks, that’s been bugging me. I also discovered that (either Safari or Saft) had enabled a ‘Block HTML refreshing’ option, which was preventing me from logging into things like online banking, or ebay. Pfft.

Do you know does this version of Safari exist on MAC OS 10.3.9 version?

Are you kidding? I love the ‘focus last selected tab’ feature. Making it a default behavior is just fine for me.
