TextMate is definitely my favorit editor for Mac OS. Its sleek and unobtrusive interface, as well as its sophisticated support for snippets, macros and text transformations convinced me. The only thing that needed some improvement was the default application icon. So once more I pushed some pixels and created an alternative icon, inspired by another replacement icon by Jonathan Raphaelson.
Design guidelines
Personally I think that one of the most important aspects when creating new application icons is to stick closely to Apple's Design Guidelines. Only if you choose the correct shapes, angles and colors, the icon will look perfect next to the icons of Apple Mail or Preview in the dock. The basic shape of the icon is similar to the one of other editors, such as TextEdit or CSSEdit. The color as well as the gear wheel, which are also used for Apple's smart folders or playlists, symbolize the automation, which is an important part of TextMate.
